DAY AGAINST DRM

  • Oct. 3rd, 2006 at 12:01 PM
Arcane Sanctum
via Boingboing...

Cory Doctorow:
Today is October 3, the International Day Against DRM -- the first global day where people rise up and say no to anti-copying technology that treats you like a crook. Remember, DRM doesn't stop "piracy" -- the only people who get DRM infections are people who don't pirate their media. You get DRM by buying your movies, music, games and books through authorized channels -- the stuff you download from P2P or buy off of a blanket at a flea-market has already had the DRM cracked off of it. They say that DRM "keeps honest people honest" -- but all it does is keep honest people in chains.

Here's some things to do and read to celebrate No DRM Day:

The Digital TV Liberation Front's Wendy Seltzer is giving a free talk tonight at Los Angeles's USC Annenberg School (main campus) at 7PM.

DefectiveByDesign's list of anti-DRM actions contains over 200 suggestions for activities you can participate in today and all year round to fight DRM.

DRMFree.org is a search-engine for DRM-free music for sale on the Internet, a single index of dozens of sites that sell or give away music without crippleware.

DRM.info is a site aimed at explaining DRM to the uninitiated -- what DRM is, why you should care, and what you can do about it. Tell your friends!

Who Killed TiVoToGo? is a murder-mystery from the Electronic Frontier Foundation that explains how even restricted services that let you get more out of your property are being axed by regulators and the entertainment industry (here's how to fight back).

Kembrew McLeod's guest-edited issue of the journal Cultural Studies contains uproarious scholarly works on the copyfight.

Darkside Podcast Logo request

  • Aug. 23rd, 2006 at 10:55 AM
Arcane Sanctum

If any one of my listeners is an artist/graphic designer/ or knows anyone who is so inclined, I am looking for logo art for the podcast. The only real design constraint is that it needs to scale down to a 100x100 pixel image without distortion. Otherwise go crazy. I need a banner image (any size) and icon (100x100). The site colors are going to be black white and red. Thanks in advance.

NEW HORROR STORY PODCAST

  • Aug. 14th, 2006 at 11:49 AM
Arcane Sanctum
A new horror short story podcast is out called Pseudopod. It is biweekly and the sister show to Escape Pod. This weeks show is called Bag Man by Scott Sigler. Here is a teaser:

I swallowed. I didn’t want this to happen. I knew the game. Bag Man
always called the cops and gave them a code. He gave that same code to the
victim. Even after two years of killings, the fucking cranks were still
calling 9-1-1, claiming the Bag Man had called them and that they needed
protection. His codes solved that problem. He was a damn courteous kid.

Thing was, the codes became more of a warning to the cops than a way to
separate out the sick, attention-starved loonies. The cops wanted to confirm
Bag Man’s targets — not so they could stop him, but so they could stay the
hell out of his way.

You can download the story or subscribe to the podcast. If you like it tell a friend. I like this story and think you will too. Pseudopod is edited by Mur Lafferty and Ben Phillips. Give it a listen and head on over there and leave them some feedback on their first episode. More about the podcast here.

Lavalier mics still not here

Bitch Please
<rant>Giant Squid Audio makes these great Lavalier mics for recording interviews / bootlegging concerts / etc... I ordered one from them and they only shipped it yesterday. Ironically on the same day I wrote and complained. If one has a home business and relies on word of mouth for marketing of said product it would behoove one to be a bit more professional than most since every customer counts.</rant>
